Luigi consolidates: Opens new deli to raves

For the past four years, Martinez’s Luigi Daberdaku has commuted several times a day between his corner grocery store on Main Street and his deli on Lombard Street in San Francisco. In what has become a familiar refrain, the economic depression slowly took its toll on his daily receipts and he found he could no longer sustain both locations.

Fortunately, he said on Monday afternoon, after several rejected requests to his landlord to incorporate a full delicatessean in his store, the landlord took a field trip to check out his SF operation and finally gave the green light to merge the two.

Daberdaku sold off merchandize and hauled his display cases and refrigerators to Martinez; for weeks he and his entire family have toiled long hours to transform the former shelves of 99 cent and under products into a top-shelf eatery complete with indoor tables and chairs.

Now instead of driving to San Francisco every day, Daberdaku said he drives to Alameda at 5:30 a.m. to buy Semifreddi’s bread fresh from the company’s ovens.

Daberdaku added that he is moving away from bargain merchandise and focussing more on imported European food products.

“It’s been my dream for six years to do a deli in Martinez, and now everybody is going to happy with their sandwich, everybody [returns once they taste his sandwiches],” said Daberdaku.

He has scheduled a ribbon cutting and grand opening party for January 16.

The former $.99 and up store is undergoing a unique metamorphosis.

Few businesses undergo changes the way that the former 99-cent-and-up store has in recent months. Owner/operator Luigi Daberdaku  may seem like a pretty simple guy but the former San Francisco restaurateur has many innovative ideas. He moved his deli operations to Main Street Martinez and with it came unusual customer perks. On Fridays, Daberdaku partners with a licensed massage therapist to offer free chair massages while you wait for your lunch along with food samples, live music and hula lessons.

Fresh Semifreddi’s bread is piled high with your choice of fine meats and condiments. Daberdaku’s son Pierin Daberdaku is a Cordon Bleu graduate who designed the sandwich menu and salad offerings.

A Deli-licious Launch Just In Time For Lunch

The 500 block of Main Street gets yet another eatery as Luigi’s 99 Cent Store adds an authentic deli to its offerings.

Luigi Daberdaku has had a dream for the past six years, and last week that dream came true. He served his first sandwich to a grateful customer and thus launched the latest lunch option in downtown Martinez. And it’s receiving rave reviews.

The deli, located in the rear of Luigi’s 99 Cent and Up is a humble enough affair – beneath its glass counters is displayed a variety of gourmet cheeses, meats and homemade salads. Add those ingredients between two slices of artisan bread by Semifreddi’s Bakery and you have yourself an honest-to-goodness deli sandwich right here in River City.

Enjoy it to go, or sit at one of the tables. It’s far enough away from the store traffic to feel as though you’re in a separate establishment.

“I had the new police chief in here, and the mayor,” Daberdaku said. “They were very impressed.”

Another impressed official trying out the newest dining spot on Monday was Contra Costa County Clerk/Recorder Steve Weir. He sent Martinez Patch a review shortly after he finished his sandwich.

“I think Martinez is blessed with many great places to eat and the new Luigi’s Deli is a good addition,” Weir wrote. “Food is fresh (including bread), and the helping is generous (the sandwich is ample for two). They did not have whole wheat, and I have asked for that option.”

“We’re thrilled to be here,” said Liz Sandoval, who was helping out behind the counter on Monday. “We look forward to people finding out about us and joining us for lunch.”
